Getting rid of unwanted houseguest in California
I let a former girlfriend temporarily stay in my house three weeks ago, as she was leaving her previous residence and had no place to stay. She has overstayed her welcome, and I want her to leave now. I gave her until the end of the month, but she has made no effort to find another place. She told me that she would be staying until January. What must I do to get her out of my house? She pays no rent or any other bills. And she is nuts, as was I for letting her stay in the first place. We have not been boyfriend-girlfriend for almost a year.

    Hello bruno:

Legally, she MAY be a tenant, and you'll have to evict her. Or, she could be a trespasser, if your cops would consider her that. Most cops won't, however. They'd rather eat doughnuts than actually help someone.

A telephone call to them would answer that question, however. If, you find that they'd rather stuff their pie holes, then you'll have to follow the eviction process for your state.

We have copy of YOUR states landlord tenant law at the top of the real estate page on a "sticky note".
