    Ceiling Fan remotes.
Currently I have a ceiling fan that works with a handheld remote control. My question is how do I get the ceiling fan to work with my universal remote that runs everything else...ie...tv,dvd,surround sound, etc? :mad:If I need to get a different ceiling fan what do I need to look for that will tell me if my universal remote will work with it? Is there some sort of receiver that I can add to my current ceiling fan that will allow it to work with my universal remote? Thanks ahead of time!!! :D

I can't give you a specific recommendation, but in general the universal remote will not be able to control the ceiling fan.

The universal remotes (and most remotes, for that matter) use infrared (IR) beams to control the device. On the other hand, fan remotes are more like your garage door opener--they use radio waves (RF) to control the device. These two are therefore incompatible.

There are some high-end remote controls for home entertainment systems that use RF, but it is doubtful that you could ever get one to control your fan, in my opinion.

There might be a ceiling fan out there somewhere that uses an IR remote. If you can find one of these, it might work with your universal remote. I'd make sure I could return the fan if it failed to work.

Sorry I couldn't give you better news,

Your not entirely out of luck:

Lutron Maestro IR Fan/Light Control Dimmers

But, you may have to do some serious surgery. I didn't look at the installation guide. You'll have to re-wire and likely bring the fan and light wires into the switch box and provide a neutral. I'm only guessing.

Note that it is compatible with learning IR remotes.

Ceiling fan remotes generally operate much like garage door openers and without rolling security codes.

Does your Universal remote have buttons for a ceiling fan?
