I want to add a receptacle on the other side of wall. I think that I need to find the hot black on the top or bottom of the current mid run receptacle and pigtail, with wire nuts, the wire to run over to the other receptacle. I also think that I would also pigtail the corresponding neutral white wire from the same cable and again run it to the new receptacle. Is this correct?

I am reading as much as I can about electrical but my books and curiously the net doesn't answer this specific question.

You are correct. Just use a short piece of Romex wire and hook the corresponding colors up to the new outlet (black to gold screw, white to silver screw, bare to green screw). Generally, outlets have both screws and a hole in the back for hookup. If the old outlet has both screws taken by wires, you can strip your new wire back the appropriate amount and push it into the proper hole (I prefer the screws, however). That way, no pigtails!

Another tip: Mount your new outlet behind -- BUT NOT DIRECTLY BEHIND -- the existing outlet. If the two are directly opposite, the boxes will interfere with each other, so put the new box in the same stud cavity, but not exactly behind the old outlet.

It goes without saying: turn the power off first.
