I am replacing (or attempting to) an old non-digital Honeywell dial thermostat with the Honeywell rth230b thermostat. I have Y- G- W- R- B wire coming out of the wall. On the old thermostat the blue wire was not used, it was wrapped up and tucked into the wall space. The rest of the wires when to their corresponding colors:
Y = Y
W = W
G = G
The red wire was stripped bare in two places and wrapped around both red (h & c) terminals.
I put the red wire in the Rh and used the jumper provided to the Rc and connected the other wires to their corresponding colors.

I put fully charged batteries in the unit and actually tried 2 sets. The only thing that I can get to work is the fan while in manual mode. The thermo shows the little flame and snowflake when switched in too heating and cooling modes but nothing happens. It is easily ebough to program it. Trying to manually change themp I get no reaction from the funace or AC. It is an older OIL burner furnace and it worked fine before the change.
Any Ideas?

Try using some real batterys. Rechargeables have caused problems in the past with thermostats.

Hi, Thanks for responding so quickly. I just go back from the store with some brand new Alkaline batteries and installed them.

It still doesn't respond. The only thing that I can get to work is the fan while in manual mode. The thermo shows the little flame and snowflake when switched in to heating and cooling modes but nothing happens. I completely disconnected the unit and re-installed it. I have left the batteries out before I replaced them in hopes that it would reset it self. Still nothing.

The unit I am replacing is a Honeywell T87f if that helps

If it is wired exactly as stated and you programed the settings exactly as necessary it should work fine.Also remember to set the jumper for the kind of heat you have.

Pay attention to what it says about the snow flake etc.

Thanks for your help. It was a combination of things.

1. Being the delay on the start up. It only mentions the delay in the AC mode not the heat mode.

2. Apparently when installing the new thermostat on an old plaster wall it does not sit flat. After waiting for the delay and nothing happened I was going to replace the batteries again I was pushing on the t-stat and the fan kicked on. I tried holding it tight to the wall and the heat kicked on. 1 small shim later and I had some glorious heat. I am going to find a better solution light building up a mounting plate, but for now I have heat!
