Hi all,

This may seem like a dumb question to ask, but I am questioning if next year is really a good time to have a wedding.

The reason for this question is due to the economic crisis and stuff, I mean having cash in hand at that point in time would be a good idea and stuff, so I don't know if spending it on a luxury such as a wedding is a good idea. I mean I'm not being stingy or anything, I'm just thinking if it'd be better to have a small wedding next year, something simple with not too many people, more like a courthouse thing, then after the crisis passes and we can all breathe again, then have a real big ceremony. I know my fiancé would not object to this because she feels really bad she can't contribute any money to the wedding due to her own financial situation, but I was just wondering if it made sense to anyone else to postpone the big wedding thing for a year or something, but just have a small intimate gathering next year so we can still get married.

It is never a good idea to spend more money on a giant wedding unless you have enough money that it will not effect you or your life style. A couple can have wonderful weddings without spending 1000's of dollars.

Thanks for that. Its just that since I'm the first child and only son of an Indian family, my parents do want a wedding, and since are Christians, they want to invite the whole church. If I could afford it, then fine, but for me to invite about half the church, I have to save like crazy from now till the wedding day, and even then it wouldn't be enough and my parents will have to come up with some money too. Then I worry about the house I'm going to live in. I bought it almost 2 years ago so I'm paying a mortgage there, so that's not too bad, but I need money for like furniture and household stuff, so I was thinking of saving money on the huge wedding thing, have a small simple one, and save the money for the house, and when we have saved enough, me and my wife could then have a nice wedding with everyone invited. Does that make sense?

You make plenty of sense and your parents should understand that and if they don't then oh well. My friend recently got married and married at the courthouse and just invite people for bunch at an hotel and we still had fun.

I am having a house wedding and everything else there because it saves us money. Also, I am saving a lot of money because I am making everything. Me and my fiancé, like you, didn't want to spend ton of money on a weddings when we could do other things with it. As long as your marrying the one you love, that is all that matters right? Congratulations!

A wedding is a major expenditure, so it is smart to be concerned about finances before making this decision. If you are concerned about paying bills or having the money for everyday things, then no - now is not a good time to have a big wedding.

The important thing is the marriage - not the wedding.

To me the courthouse just seems so cold! You can hire a clergyman, or even a justice of the peace, and have a park or beach wedding, or anywhere with a more romantic setting. It doesn't cost much to have the ceremony officiate come to where you want to have your ceremony. The party afterwards is fun, but the ceremony should be special, and memorable. Trust me, no matter what your fiancée says, she really doesn't want to get married in a courthouse. A park is free, a beach is free, why not take advantage of that? A park or beach has a ton of room for friends and family, and you really don't have to decorate! You could have a romantic evening wedding, and decorate the surrounding trees with lights, and that would be about it! Then you've got your background with the landscape and pretty lights for pics!
