Why did furnace come on instead of heat pump.
I turned on the heat pump as it was getting cold in the house, inside temp 62. I went to the thermostat change the setting from off to HEAT. Increased the temp to 69.

The thermostat changed setting to emergency heat ,and the gas furnace came on??

When the temp in the house reached 69 the heat pump worked fine.

    Why did this happen?

There was to wide a spread between the indoor temp and the setting for heat causing the furnace to come on instead of the heat pump.

    Is this normal?

I cannot say if it is normal or not. It depends upon the settings of the thermostat. As long as the heat pump is now working As it should it should be OK.

    I have another problem.

Why is the Furnace staying on when the temp is met? Stayed on for 45 min.

Demand met so heat pump should keep the temp in the house. Right?

    That seems long to me.

I have lots to learn about heat pumps.

I thought that furnce would only work when its cold (below) And I would use the heat pump the rest of the time

Heat pumps do run for a long time and eventually should shut off at the design temperature. I would also like to addd that it is posible your heat pump is experiencing a problem. If conditions persist I would contact a local HVAC dealer to have them check the unit for proper operation.
