I have an elongated Mansfield toilet that was installed about 3 months ago. In order to have it flush properly I have to hold the handle down... otherwise the water just rises to the top of the bowl.
The plumber said that "he's never seen this happen on Mansfields before."
That statement I do not believe!
I don't want to call him again. Is there a simple solution I can handle myself? (I'm a female senior citizen... no plumbing experience!)

Hey Nokomis, We're neighbors! I live just north of you. I retired from Arrow Plumbing In Sarasota. In my capacity as shop trouble shooter I began to run into a slew of complaints on our new construction that were just like yours. I knew they all couldn't be " bad toilets" so I went looking for the cause. I found that when installing the new bowl that the wax ring had been forced out into the discharge pipe and blocking the free flow of water. When the water hit it a backpressure was set up preventing the siphon that makes a good flush and the solids just swirled around while the water went slowly down. I had to set up meeting with our plumbers and show them the problem and how to fix it. When you set the bowl, put the wax seal down on the flat side to the closet flange. Then take your hands and bevel the wax seal outward so that when you set a bowl on it the wax is forced out instead of in blocking the flush. The customer complaints stopped and I had less work to do. Try molding the wax seal so it doesn't choke down on the flush and check the water level in the tank to be sure it's 1/2" under the white overflow tube when the tank's filled. Good luck, Tom
It sounds like the float switch and float setting is wrong or broken. When the water rises the float rises it should stop at a intended height. Call the company and tell them its broken then they'll do something.

Back in 1992, we have installed 238 new Low Flush toilets in retirement community. In the weeks following the installation we were flooded with phone calls regarding "....water filling up all the way to the rim when we flush....". People questioned quality and design of their new toilet and some even asked me to give them their 6 gln old toilet back.
What we have found out was that it was not the toilet, or our installation, but people and the way they used it. New Low Flush toilets use Less Water and Smaller Trap to flush the same amount of waste. Therefore, they are prone to clogging and bathroom habits must be slightly modified for the toilet to function properly.
We had to print out a flyer to inform each person about how to use their new toilet. After that, phone calls stopped almost immediately. However, we got one anonymous response back. It read: "...Don't tell me what to do ! I have been using toilet for 78 years ! I know exactly how to wipe my a** ! .... "
Oh well... That note was framed and hung on the wall in our office for many years... :D

Tom, what's your practice installing wax ring: Do you put wax ring on closet ring and then toilet on over it - or do you first put wax ring on the bottom of the toilet and than set them both onto closet ring ? Just curious...
Seems like it's "dealers choice" Milo. Some web sites say "Place it in the bowl first" and others say to "place it on the flange". We had a problem with Briggs bowls in our new construction. The wax seal would spread inward choking off the flush unless we beveled them outward. So I place them on the flange and form a bevel out. Of course that was twenty years ago and things no doubt have charged. (God! Has it been 20 years since I retired?)Quote:
