Hello,

I recently purchased a house built in 1948. When I attempted to install my dryer, I realized the outlet was 3 prong 250v. Also, the fuse block that the previous owner had designated "dryer" contains 2 non-60 bussman cartridge fuses. So, I have two qustions:

1) Can I simply install a 240v outlet where the 250v used to be?

2) It seems like two 60 amp cartridge fuses are a LOT for a dryer. Am I correct in this assumption?

That is a 240 volt outlet. Some of them had that 250 volt marking on the face, but it's for 240 volt. The question is what amperage. It could be a 50 amp stove receptacle. You need a 30 amp receptacle that matches your dryer plug. If you need a 4 prong receptacle, that will require new wiring.

Yes, that is TOO high for a dryer, 30 amps is what is required. You can put smaller buss fuses in that box if you want. They make adapters.
