    Curious in Houston
I am currently attending school studying surgical technology and am just about finished. I have to complete my clinicals, then take the exam to become a certified surgical technologist. I currently have clinical clock hours and cases at a facility that obviously do not perform background checks, because if they had, I would not have been allowed to scrub in. (Sometimes it's not what you know, its who you know)... thats a old time statement that in some cases it may apply; but what I would like to know is if the county hospitals hire convicted felon with felonies over 10 yrs. Old? I pretty much know that I would probably not be ever given the opportunity to scrub in at Memorial Hermann Hospital but I still want to explore all options... someone please enlighten me:confused:

I certainly cannot answer for your specific area, I can only advise according to what my state requires. Where I live ALL employees of every hospital must go through a background check to get hired. This means surgeons all the way down to housekeeping as well as cafeteria staff. Now the requisites are different I am sure.

However, the hospitals in my state do not hire felons of any kind, even certain misdemeanors are questioned. Have you looked into having your record expunged? If not, you will need an attorney to do this, and I do not know the process.

Now, you say it's all in who you know... Well, I am close family friends with the Chief of Staff at our hospital. I worked for him 14 years ago, he delivered my youngest son, and our teenage daughters are on swim team together and spend weekends at each other's houses. HOWEVER, after he initially hired me, I still had to go through the background check as it is policy at my facility that every individual go through one at hire and then again randomly during employment.

I clicked on the introduction part and I was like "WoW!!". You've accomplished so much in spite of the circumstances (break-up of first marriage, being diagnosed with breast cancer) surrounding your life. Congratulations on all that you've achieved!! Good Luck in all the you strive to become.:)
Thank you for advising me and answering my questions; because if anyone would know, it would definitely be you.
