I certainly cannot answer for your specific area, I can only advise according to what my state requires. Where I live ALL employees of every hospital must go through a background check to get hired. This means surgeons all the way down to housekeeping as well as cafeteria staff. Now the requisites are different I am sure.
However, the hospitals in my state do not hire felons of any kind, even certain misdemeanors are questioned. Have you looked into having your record expunged? If not, you will need an attorney to do this, and I do not know the process.
Now, you say it's all in who you know....Well, I am close family friends with the Chief of Staff at our hospital. I worked for him 14 years ago, he delivered my youngest son, and our teenage daughters are on swim team together and spend weekends at each other's houses. HOWEVER, after he initially hired me, I still had to go through the background check as it is policy at my facility that every individual go through one at hire and then again randomly during employment.
