About 12 years ago, I bought remotes for two of my fans. They died about 6 months ago, about a month apart. A couple of days ago, I bought a Hampton Bay 191-691 remote control system. My original remotes are no longer manufactured. It is simple. Black and white going into the remote and black (motor), white (common) and blue (light) coming out. I wired the thing in, set the DIP switches, put a brand new battery in the remote, turned on the fan and - nothing. I pulled all of the chains fruitlessly. So I hooked the remote up to my multitester. I expected to see a voltage drop when I keyed the remote. Nada. It was a steady 110, which seemed strange since the fan didn't appear to be getting juice. So I bought an identical remote and tried again. Nothing. I called the company, but they were clueless (can't blame them). I thought that maybe my house wiring was wrong, so I checked it. Black is positive and white is ground. I checked the fan wiring. It is correct. So I hard wired the fan in. It is running like a charm right now. Funny thing. When I was playing with the remote, I got a mild shock. This is funny because the power to the whole house was off at the time. Oh, another funny thing. When I installed the second remote, the light worked fine. It dimmed and shut off on command. Then I switched the battery to the other remote to check it, the light wouldn't light. When I put the battery back into the original remote, the light wouldn't light. I now have remote #3, but I'm reluctant to wire it in until I get some other thoughts. Thanks.

First of all, what model fans are you wiring the remotes to? I got the impression these were existing fans, you added remotes, and then you added new remotes when those remotes died.

Second of all, make sure the fans are set to high before you try and use them with the remotes.

HAMPTON BAY CEILING FAN transmitter will not fit into the canopy

Is there a question here? The transmitter isn't supposed to fit inside the canopy, but the receiver is.

I don't think so, I'm sorry. Another guy, an electrician no less, just came in here asking the same question.. . And really the only thing I could tell him was, if it came with the fan and it's designed to fit, it should fit one way or the other. But I haven't installed this model fan myself so I can't tell you how to make it fit.

What model fan is it? Maybe one of these days I will go down to Home Depot and see for myself, if it's going to be a reoccuring problem.

It is a hampton bay classic collection, northport III. Model number 408980. Ul # EF200DA-52.

Really, the other person asked about a different model. I guess this is another common problem with Hampton Bays

Keep trying. IT SHOULD FIT. I have no idea why it doesn't, and/or why people can't get it to fit.

Thank goodness I found this posting... I am printing this page in hopes that it will help me return my Hampton Bay 408980 fan at Home Depot. We too cannot get the receiver to fit in the canopy, we have been trying for over an hour. We know how its supposed to fit, it just simply won't squeeze into that canopy!

Another thread JUST answered this.. . It turns out the receiver fits between the mounting bracket and the ceiling.

Unbelievable!! We just took the thing down and read your post. Your right. You talk about faulty instructions that come with this thing! Simple, all you have to do is slide the receiver through FIRST... although the instructions tell you to hook all the wires up first, THEN slide it through. I wish I could backhand the person who wrote this manual. Thanks a lot for your help. :mad:

Oh, and another bonus, the website they list to help you, www.GPWarranty.com, doesn't even exist.

Rather than backhand them, hit 'em where it really hurts: their wallet. Don't buy any more Hampton Bay products.
