    Substition in recipe
Quick question. I have a recipe for some soup that looks good except for one thing. It calls for a packet of chicken gravy mix. You know like the dried powdery packets and stuff. I am not a fan of that kind of thing and prefer to not use it as it is usually loaded with all sorts of stuff including MSG. What can I use in it's place? It is for a chicken broth based soup. Thanks a lot!

If it is chicken broth based then it would already have a lot of flavour. I would go without worrying about the gravy mix. If it has to be thickened slightly, then use a bit of corn starch.

If you decide to post the recipe, I'd be happy to take a look at it. I know what you mean about those packets. They're pretty awful in so many ways. I swear I won't let them in my house. :)

One note on the corn starch: it helps if you make a slurry with it first. If you don't know what a slurry is, it's simple. Just add a little warm water (or even a little bit of the broth itself) to the cornstarch. Mix it up until it's really smooth, and then you can add it right it. It helps to keep from having to deal with any potential lumps. By the way, I do the same thing with flour.
