    Colonial Writing Style
    Two questions:
    1) Does anyone know why in colonial America, f's were sometimes subsituted for s's?
    2) Why were they only subsituted in some cases and not others?

    Example: "The Bofton News Letter"

    Hi, Flute09!

Part of this has to do with the development of writing in script and also what type-sets might be available for printing a publication. It also has to do with one type of "s" being considered to be a "long" "s".

What does appear to be an "f" is actually an "s".

For a scholarly treatise about this, please see the information that is available via clicking on the following link.

Long s - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I notice that your moniker (user name) has the word "Flute" in it. Do you play the flute, please?

    Thanks!

Flute09 agrees: Thanks for the info! I do play the flute (for seven years now). Do you?
    Thanks, Flute09!

I do play a little bit of flute. I trained to be a band and orchestra director and play a number of different instruments.

If you are into the Arts of any kind, there are quite a few of us here who have formed a bond and work to support each other in various ways.

If you're interested, please do come and be a part of our group! We tend to be in topic areas like, Art, Books & Literature, Crafts, Dance, Theater and Writing, but mostly in the Art and Writing areas. Believe it or not, there isn't much concerning band or orchestra instruments and music for those types of instruments, happening in the Music topic area. What happens there is that it's mostly about people wanting to know the name of a song and/or an artist.

Currently, I'm helping someone in the Writing topic area to compose and play a song. There are a number of wonderful visual artists that you could meet in the Art topic area.

If interested, please let me know.

    Thanks!
