My beautiful black lab chomper passed away three weeks ago from parvo. He was eight months old. At the time I did not know much about this disease or its symptoms. By the time I rushed him to the animal hospital he was deathly ill. They gave him sub-q fluids a pain and nausea shot and sent him home with antibiotics. Sadly he died later that night. I want to get a new puppy. I talked to a vet who said as long as the puppy has a parvo vaccination and the floors and area are cleaned with bleach the puppy should be okay. The puppy I want is a four month old black lab. He has not had any shots. I would go pick him up and take him straight to the vet for the shot before I bring him home. My question is does this sound okay. I could not stand to watch another dog suffer through this horrible disease. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

It is advised that one not get another puppy for at least 6 months after you lost one to parvo. The disease is not only on tile or wood floors, but also in carpet and furniture as well as in the yard where the other puppy eliminated.

As the puppy does not have a 'clean' bill of health, ask if it would be all right to get it checked by a vet before you make final decision and hopefully all would be all right, then agree to accept the dog and get the shots nec. - with this in mind though, still have to pay for the check-up and tests they may run.

Other option of course is to find a puppy that has shots and a 'clean' bill of health.

Really how much to invest is key but finding one that will be around is really key.

I would, near the point of begging, suggest you not get another dog, unless if it was older had been fully vaccinated. This is a LIFE you would be gambling with otherwise, and it would cause unnecessary to you and the puppy. About two years ago I had a dog get sick with parvo, after six months and gallons of bleach, I thought it would be safe so I bought home a beautiful great dane puppy. Three weeks later he got sick, on a Saturday night and rapidly dissolved before my eyes with no vets open to help him, he did not make it until Monday morning. He had a shots already, and was due to get his second only days after he died. Furthermore I had a vet tell me that there was a two to three day period between getting a shot and the immune system building up. You would be bringing the puppy into a deadly situation. Don't make my mistake.
