Switching 2 wire to 4 wire for new programmable thermo
I am hoping this is a simple question. I am trying to hook up 3 programmable thermostats for my oil furnace that has 3 heat zones - (forced water system).

I bought a thermostat for each zone or heat pump. Each heat pump has a two wire set up with a red and a white/yellow wire. When I was at the hardware store they said they only have 4 wire for thermostats (y,g,r,b)... so what colors from the four wire do I hook up to each heat pump? -- I am assuming red and yellow.

As for the prog. Thermostat (Hunter model 44360) the options are:

    G
    RC
    RH
    Y/O
    W/B
    Y1

I am assuming I am hooking up green to "g", yellow to "y/o", black to "w/b" and... does the red go to "rh" as I assume the "h" stands for heating. There is a jumper cable going from RC to RH do I just remove that?

Hope that makes sense to someone...

So... you have 3 existing thermostats that you want to replace with 3 new programmable thermostats... is that correct? And you only have two wires to each one? You only need the RH and W terminals for heat. Sounds like you bought heat pump thermostats which you definitely don't need. You don't have a heat pump.

I may be using the wrong lingo... I bought three programmable thermo's as I am removing three old mercury thermo's that are on the second first and basement floors. I am trying to hook them up to my furnace, which has 3 zones of forced water. Each thermostat was wired to 3 separate boxes on the furnace which connect to each box with a Red and White wire from the thermostats.

Do I just hook up the Red and Yellow (there is no W or white wire) wire to each box. (each box only has two screws to clamp wires) and then hook up the Red and Yellow to the Prog. Thermo?

If I don't need heat pump thermostats -- would you mind suggesting what I DO need?

Thanks -- sorry I am definitely "green" at this.

Just make sure that closing this pair of wires calls for heat.

You need W (Call for heat)
You need Rh. There is no harm leaving Rh connected to Rc

    And

You need to take the Hunter back for a different brand. They have reliability issues.

You need a programmable heat only thermostat. It will need only two wires to function, and a batter backup would be handy to maintain programming in case of a power failure or shutting off the power for service. Just look at the White Rogers or Honeywell sites and find the heat only stat with programming features you desire... and good luck.

Ok - thanks for the advice... funny, I purchase the Hunter thermo on Newegg.com and it had great reviews.

I appreciate the advice - thanks.

The color of the two wires does not matter( although they should be red and white for a heat only system). Just hook the red to rh and the yellow to w on the thermostat(w/b in your case) and you should be just fine.

I agree with Kiss, return your thermostat and get a conventional honeywell, honeywell, honeywell, or white rodgers thermostat. Just ask for a single stage 24v honeywell thermostat and you should be set.

Good luck and please feel free to ask any other questions. Lets us know how it works out.
