    Wrong t-stat setting
    Would there be any system performance issues if the T-stat settings were incorrectly set to 3 stage heat / 2 stage cool instead of 2 stage heat / 1 stage cool? I'm running a Trane XL14i heat pump with a variable speed handler. The T-stat is a TCONT802A. Thank you in advance for any replys.

    That is very difficult to say. What difference does it make now? I guess by now it has been changed to the proper setting? You are there did you notice any difference in performance?

    I did change the setting and everythign seems to run fine now. Previously I had issues with the system cycling on and off (5min off, 20min on) when it was trying to cool. This would go in for hours. Air temp at register never got cooler than 10 degrees of the air going into the return. I'm told that the difference should be around 20 degrees. Although my contractor has changed so many things in the system to try and solve the problem I'm not sure if this setting change made the difference or not. Also I'm in heat mode now rather than cooling.

    As time goes by you will find out. I hope you did not change the original settings and mess the contractor up. LOL That is one reason I do not like to have digital thermostats that do not have a contractor lock out. Many times home owners play with the base settings then complain when the system does not work correctly.

    It's easy for contractors to say the client messed it up. They always seem to think the client know nothing and can not learn anything about HVAC. If my contractor would have gotten this right in the first place I would not be having any issues. What does it tell you that I am out trying to find answers while they are sitting back hoping I don't call them back...

    I see your point but many times a homeowner who changes settings,flips switches, or otherwise messes around with the equipment can cause major problems.

    I always suggest that if you are not happy with your contractor call another one that is more experienced and have them fix the problem. Then you can back bill the original contractor or take them to court. You will have the proper documentation from the second company to make your case.

    One of the big mistakes people also make is trying to get a Caddy for the price of a Yugo or think there system should perform better than what it does. These kinds of complaints are almost impossible to figure out since perception of a problem or situation can mean different things to different people.

    In all your posting you never really stated what your problem really was. You need to state exactly what your performance issues are and what you think might be causing them.

    Apparently we are starting to go the wrong direction.

    I greatly appreciate your assistance and I think it is a very good thing that you are out here trying to help people like me. I realize you don't have to do this and I don't mean to offend you in any way.

    My goal was to gather information about my system to back up the info that I have and be better prepared to discuss possible issue with my installer. I'm not ready to give up on them yet although I am getting a bit frustrated. I'm trying to give them every chance to correct the issues. I'm 99.5% there.

    I do not plan on doing any changes to the system myself, that part is for my contractor. But I do feel that I need to be knowledgeable enough to know if what they are telling me makes sense or not. I've heard so many conflicting things from them I don't know what to believe so I'm educating myself.

    Again, thank you for taking the time to help others. It is a good and noble thing you do here.
