Horrible roaming smell after rain
I hope I can get some help here...
A few weeks ago we experienced heavy rain (several inches). We were very pleased that our 100 year old home did not leak, the basement did not flood or seep and we thanked our lucky stars.
A few days later, there was a smell. It was not a pleasant one. Every day the smell got progressively worse. I can say that it smells very similar to a dead and rotting animal corpse (Having smelled a dead and rotting rat corpse before I find the two smells similar). The smell seemed to be coming out of the heat registers. I trekked down to our basement to find the critter. The smell seemed to be coming from one area but there was no critter. Days later, the smell was worse and there was no evidence of a rotting corpse (Tell tale flies, etc)
The smell subsided, thankfully, and we were able to start enjoying our home again.
Until today! Yesterday it rained and the smell that was dwindling to barely there is back full force. I've read about checking the drain traps and so we've checked them all. My husband crawled on top of the roof and looked down the vent to make sure it wasn't clogged, it's not.
The smell seems to move around so that is why I think that it must be some form of gas. If it were a critter, it would be strong in one area and stay in that area.
But... now what? I have no idea what to do or where to look. What I do know, is that this is actually causing my husband and I to be a little depressed. We feel trapped and really down because our home smells so horrible!
We have a one year old son as well, if it is a gas I need to find the problem but don't know where to look!
