Moving house and dog won't stop crying in new yard
We are moving house this weekend and my husband is at the new house with our dog. He hasn't stopped crying in the new yard since yesterday. My hubby has tried feeding him, buying him some more toys, more water and he has a dog house to keep him covered from the rain. We had to give away our other dog about 3 weeks ago and he's been OK since then. I don't know what else we can do...

This dog is experiencing some major changes -- his doggy friend has disappeared and now his house and yard have disappeared. Will his food, his water, his toys, his family (pack) disappear too? Surround him with as much familiar stuff as possible. Do you allow him in the house? Is he familiar with your furniture, with your clothing and personal smells? His heart is breaking. Talk with your vet for ideas on how to help your dog get over this depression (without medicating him).

Hopefully, some dog lovers will also reply to your post.

It sounds like your doggy is going through a lot right now. You got rid of his friend, and of course he doesn't understand why, but he dealt with it. Now you are moving houses very soon after. These are two big traumatic events for your pup. Plus, is he normally an outside dog? Give him some special treatment (meaning extra petting not just toys) so he knows that you guys aren't going to leave him next, he might be feeling kind of abandoned right now. Plus going to the dog park to play with other dogs might make him happier too. Let me know how it works out!

You GAVE AWAY YOUR OTHER DOG!?

Omg! I don't really know how anyone can do such a thing!

Perhaps bring the poor "packing animal" into your home where YOU GUYS LIVEEEE!

I have a neighbor that also strings his dog on a line to the dog house. The dog is DEPRESSED!

Unless it's a Husky-type dog, THEY DON'T Want to BE LEFT AWAY FROM THEIR PEOPLE, whom they consider family/pack members.

I can't be open minded here... so I'm leaving.:(

(I wish your dog happiness and love... too bad you don't!). ARGGGGGGHHHHH!:mad::(

Just thought I'd update the question with our solution... :)

We figured because he hadn't seen us move he might have thought we were going to leave him and because it was only my husband with him...

So we took him back home but the day we moved all our furniture etc we moved him down as well and let him see all our furniture in the new place getting unloaded etc off the truck... He cried a little bit that night and is still crying every night but only for about 10 minutes but he can hear us inside the house talking etc which comforts him and he goes to bed after that...

Also just for SweetDee's information we had to give our other dog away as he's bitten both of us before and we have a baby on the way... I wouldn't want to risk the baby getting bitten... so as Logic suggested you should not answer questions if you aren't going to help!!

Thank you to everyone else for all your help... We really appreciate it... :)

I had hoped there was a good reason you gave the other dog away. Telling us right in the beginning about the coming baby and about the dog bites would have helped responders a lot!

I hope things continue to go well.

Why is your other dog kept outside? What kind of dog is it?

Was the dog you gave away also kept outside on a permanent basis? If so, the aggression issue would not be surprising. Dogs require proper socialization in order to be balanced pets. They cannot possibly be socialized enough if they are kept alone outside and away from others on a regular basis. All of the socialization and training is your job. When you decided to take these dogs into your life, you were supposed to be taking on all of the responsibilities associated with giving them a good quality of life.

Why would you get dogs if you weren't willing to take care of them properly? Without knowing anything else about the situation, I can tell you that making a pet live outside is not giving them adequate care. Food, water and a basic roof are not enough!

What steps did you take with your former dog before you decided that the situation was so hopeless?

Dogs are like our children. They need to be loved, nurtured, respected, and made to feel like part of the family.

By the way, is your dog chained/tethered, or is fenced in?

In any case, I think you should read this. It's important.
