On Feb 25, 2007 ONATRAIL posted a question about severe peeling on his cedar siding. I have the same problem. We built our house in 2006 with cedar siding on it. The salesman from Sherwin Williams told me to let it age for a year before staining it. In 2007 we stained it with SW Woodscapes. This summer (2008) it started to peel severely. The manager at the SW store said they would give me more stain but couldn't quarantee that it wouldn't do the same thing. She also told me that the quarantee does not cover labor. It cost me $12000.00 to paint my house and only about $2000.00 of that was the Woodscape stain. On Mar 15, 2007 DILBERT posted an answer to ONATRAIL and mentioned a possible lawsuit. Does anyone know if there is a class action lawsuit? Did ONATRAIL get a resolution to his problem with SW? What should I do next? Should I contact the corporate headquarters of Sherwin Williams? I would apriciate any help anyone can give me.

Is this happening all over the house or just on a certain side or sides? Was the house pressure washed before the stain was applied?Just wondering if it is all the paints fault or if maybe it was not applied properly. You said you paid $12,000 for the paint job, I suppose your painter is claiming it is all the paints fault. A Sherwin Williams rep should come to your house to determine what caused this issue. Applying the paint while it is too hot or cold or if any moisture was present could have this effect.

What kind of stain was it? Oil or latex? Most paint companies guarantee only their product if the directions were followed.. . ( Paint doesn't cost these companies hardly anything) ( I get 44% off Benjamine Moore retail) Im surprised a rep hasn't already come over.. How big is your house? $12000 sounds pretty high for a paint job. Who supplied the paint? You or the painter. How many gallons did they go through? I would be pointing the finger at the painter if they supplied and suggested the paint to use and tell him/her to FIX it!

Thank you for your answer. You asked if the house had been pressure washed first. It turns out that it was not. My question is what do I do now? It's peeling all around the house on all sides. Do I need to sand it all down to bare wood and then pressure wash it?

My first response here would be did anyone read the stain directions on the can about prep?

That's the first thing to follow for a warranty to be honored.

Who stained the house?

Was it stain or paint? Or that stain/paint?

Why was it $12,000.00 to do the job?

If no satisfaction from painter or supplier start over

Pressure wash it and clean old paint/stain off. I would use another supplier for the paint and manufacture also

One of your questions was about a lawsuit, the only one I know of is regarding Sherwin's onetime manufacture of lead paint many years ago.

I wanted to chime in. We live in central MN and have this same problem. We originally built our home in 1997 and had cedar siding put on the house that was coated with a transparent stain before it was applied to our home. After about 2 years it was time to do something to the siding as is typical with a transparent stain. We decided at that time to have a professional company come out to put on a pigment stain so we wouldn't have to maintain our home every 2 years. They picked the stain, etc. They picked Woodscapes by Sherwin Williams. After a year or so it started peeling in big pieces... we couldn't believe it. Everyone that looked at the house said, wood should not peel, it will fade, but never peel. At that time we had the professionals take care of it again, with communication to the local Sherwin Williams store, they really pushed back that it wasn't their fault. We decided maybe something odd occurred and we'd take the professionals recommendations and power wash the house and redo it again. All on our nickel of course. So, another year goes by and low and behold same thing only worse! We had Sherwin Williams come out and look at it and they took a sample of the siding because they thought it was the siding. Our siding is now rotting. This is no longer a small problem. It's interesting because we had a cedar paneled garage door get wrecked a few years ago and so we had it replaced and used our spare stain from the house to stain it. We can push a hole in the cedar it is so rotten... maybe 3-4 years old. We put a deck on our house 5 years ago, again used the same stain so it matched and it is peeling as bad as the siding. We are in the process of residing our home. I don't think this is acceptable and Sherwin Williams won't do anything about it. We are convinced that our siding is rotting because of the stain... if there is a class action lawsuit out there I'd love to hear about it or maybe we'll have to start one!
