Has the drain always worked well before?

Sounds like the drain pipe is clogged. You can rent a snake at the local rental depot or similar and snake the drain line clear. Here, if you have flat or slightly pitched roof you may be able to climb up on the roof and snake down through the washing machine vent to the basement plus 10-15 feet OR look around in basement for a cleanout associated with this drain line and snake drain line from there.

Wear safety goggles and leather gloves!

There could also be a cleanout at about 12-18" off the floor just at the washing machine.

Check all this stuff and get back to us if you have more questions... glad to help.
