A friend of mine has a Nordyne mobile home furnace, model M1GB 056A BW. (serial M1A041104171) The thermocouple enters a rectangular shield. Where shoud the match's flame be placed to light the pilot light? The instructions say to place the flame on the left of the box but nothing happens when the red lever is pressed and the supply gas is turned on.
If you can see the pilot assembly and nothing is lighting with a match in front of it. You have no gas or your pilot orfice is restricted and not leting gas pass through it.
We turned on the supply line and moved the red lever to the pilot position, then depressed the red lever. After an hour of trying with the red lever depressed, we never did smell any gas. The mobile home also uses gas for the cooking stove and it is working, so I just can't figure out why there isn't any gas going to the pilot light when the red lever is depressed.
If anyone has an experience with the Nordyne unit, we would appreciate knowing. Would one remove the thermocouple and install another one? The unit is only two years old and it is in Arizona so the furnace doesn't run much.
Its starting to sound like you have a dirty pilot orifice.
The thermocouple has little to do with lighting. Air in the lines or a restricted pilot orifice come to mind. Another possibility is that a safety tripped in which case, usually the entire control needs to be replaced.
The thermocouple maintains the pilot once it gets hot enough. The red button basically bypasses the thermocouple.
