    Iducer motor fail on Carrier 58MVP furnace
    The variable speed inducer motor does not start at all. I have replaced the motor and control board. Is there a reset or programming that has to be done? Is there something else that could be causing this? I ran the equipment test mode and inducer failed to reach speed is the only error I get.

    Blocked discharge pipe is the first thing I would check for. Check and reset main power after two hours. There is a built in delay that can only be defeated by special Carrier tools to the best of my knowledge.

    NOTE: This furnace is not home owner friendly to work on. Special classes are required to be taken before a dealer is allowed to sell the equipment. Special tools and adapters are needed for a laptop computed to really be able to check out the furnace properly. All else is guesswork as you are finding out. The adapters are not for sale to the general public as far as I know. You need to be a dealer to get them.
    I suggest you Call for ON SITE SERVICE from a local Carrier dealer so they can repair your furnace properly and then run the system through a complete checkout that involves more that I am willing to post here since you do not have the proper tools from Carrier to start with.

    Below is just some info on your system that I can pass on to you. I am not allowed by carrier to post anything else. Sorry.

    If you kill power going to the furnace and try to restart will the inducer motor try to start? You have a blinking light on the control board that will tell you what's wrong or what to check first.

    I have performed the equipment test. Everything checks out except the Inducer. It does nothing, not even hum and the only code I get is 42 Inducer failed to reach speed. I verified there is 120 V at the plug and verified pin to pin continuity. There are three additional leads at the plug I assume is a speed signal and feedback circuit. I have tried running it in emergency heat mode, same result.
    I quickly ran out of DIY checks and called a local repairman who said they worked on Carrier. They replaced the motor and it did nothing so they swapped it back to the original. I replaced the control board (verified dip switches and jumper) and nothing so I swapped it back. Thinking the new motor may have been bad, the repairman brought it to Carrier and it tested good so he has ordered a wiring harness that is back ordered. So as of yesterday I have been without a furnace 10 days and counting with a repairman who has pretty much given up. He told me to call a Carrier dealer:eek:. I have a certified Carrier repairman calling tomorrow. What questions should I ask him when he calls to verify they have the proper expertise?

    Infinity Certified ? That is your question for the Carrrier man.

    Sorry you are having so many problems but as long as the manufactures keep building these expensive toys the more problems the end user will have.
    The overall cost of operation including repair especially when it goes out of warranty will never be recovered. While they are nice units I will never own one and I talk people out of them all the time. There is just not enough trained people with the proper tools to work on them and the price of the parts is outrageous.

    You can take a standard high efficiency Goodman unit and add one cheap modification and be within 1% of the efficiency of a Infinity unit. That is $ 1.00 per hundred less savings on gas. If you are a big spender and use $ 2000.00 worth of gas per year you will only use $20.00 more in gas by using the Goodman or other manufactures setup but you will save thousands in maintaince costs over the life of the furnace. While the Infinity is a good system it just does not make sense to a logical person.

    A side note from a email one of my students who has now been in the field for 3 years sent me a few weeks ago. Just for fun you might look into the circuit board problems. It might effect the Infinity you have also.

    ~10 year old furnace started intermittent lock up with error code 31.
    Careful investigation revealed intermittent inducer motor. It starts
    but stops running or it won't start when heat is called for.
    Took the control board out(XXXXXXX) and went through it. The problem found was cracked solder joint on two high Wattage resistors R34 and R33
    (both 330 Ohms) had cracked solder joints on the PCB due to heat(?).
    Reinforced the joints with silver solder. Now furnace is behaving normal again.

    You taught me well.

    Furnace fixed on day 13 :D High of 58 tomorrow.
    It turned out to be the inducer motor after all. Even though it was the first thing changed and Carrier Rep said it tested fine. So bad parts do happen. Thanks again for all the help.

    Dang what a pain in the A$$. LOL I am glad you got it going finally. Now if it was 10 degrees below 0 it would have been a lot worse. Time to check Ebay for some cheap extra parts to keep on the shelf just in case.
