We have a small home (1000 sf) w/attached garage. The house is brick const. build ~1961 (solid as a Battleship).. . But with NO storage. We've installed an Alum pull down access ladder in the garage to get up into the attic; House has a Hip roof.. . My questions is; after flooring with ply-brds, I'm concerned with the amount of weight the attic floor can handle.. . Don't want it coming down on our heads! Thanks

If the floor beams are on 16 and at least 2x6 or 2x8, they can hold quite a bit of weight. Get some 1/2 or 3/4 plywood and do the floor. When these houses are designed the town approves the plans. You can go down to the building dept and ask them if what you plan to do is structually correct.

Chances are good that your ceiling joists and roof rafters are 24" on center, but regardless of the construction type, keep the weight of the stored nearest the area where a wall is under the ceiling joist.
You can store the lite items in the center of span.
In an case don't overload the area.

Many Thanks to both of you.. . I had thought as much (or hoped to hear what I thought was correct.. . Reinforcement :) ) The joist are 2x8s and 16" OC.. . Should be find as long as I don't over do it. Just finished wiring new lights to a switch in the garage, makes it a whole lot easier to see and move around. I'm set, thanks again for alleviating my fears!
