I need to add a bathroom in the basement of our 95 year old home. We currently have a toilet drain in there but I am not sure of how to configure the tub/sink drain. I think I basically have the following 4 options but not sure which one would work the best. The bathroom will not be used too often since it will not be the main bath.

- Break up the slab and connect the sink/tub drains to the toilet drain.

- Install a double sanitary tee ontop of the toilet drain and dump the tub and sink into the sides of the tee. Also dump a wall hung toilet into the top of the tee.

- INstall some sort of pump to pump everything up and into the drain stack which is on the other side of the basement.


I am really leaning towards the second option but I am not sure if it would be OK.

Option two is a no go. To do this properly you must break the slab, install drains into existing underground pipe and make sure to vent each fixture properly. Would help if you could send some pics of your setup.

I do not understand why I would need to break up the slab since there is already a pipe sitting on top of the slab. IN the basement there use to be a small shed with a toilet. I removed the toilet and now there is just a standard pvc pipe sticking out of the ground that the toilet mounts to.

First off, the wallmount toilet drain would have to be located below the double san tee. The toilet would be wet vented because you would have other fixtures draining into the "vent" of the toilet. Second, how do you plan to do the drain for the tub. Unless you are going to build a two foot platform for the tub to sit on. A normal tub setup would have the p-trap below floor level. After all of this, you need to make sure to continue your vent up and out through the roof. Would really help if I had some pics to look at. I thinks its going to be a bit more of a job than you had origianally hoped. But that's why we are here. Need a better explanation of your project and I'm sure we can help you get it all figured out.

Most bathroom groups are roughed in like this.
Toilet connects to sewer main or the stack vent. Lavatory connects to toilet drain and runs a vent off the top the stubout tee out the roof or revents back into a dry vent in the attic.. The toilet wet vents through the lavatory vent and the tub/shower connects to the lavatory drain and is wet vented by it. This is a normal rough in and is acceptable both by local and state codes and also The Standard Plumbing Code Book in 90 percent of the country. Check your local codes to make sure you're not in the excluded 10 percent.. The vent off the lavatory may be run out the roof or revented back into a dry vent in the attic or if you're reventing back into a fixtures dry vent you must make your connection at least 6 inches over that fixtures flood rim.

Yes! I agree the correct way would be to install the drainage below grade. However, ( as I attempt to explain to the guys under UPC Code) This page isn't about code or a "correct installation" . A platform would work so if the OP thinks that's easier then breaking up the slab Let's see if we can help him. Regards, Tom
