    Birth Certificate
I am trying to get a state issued I.D. The name on my current I.D. is my mothers maiden name which I have had since elementary school. I now live in Colorado and they are telling me since the last name on my birth certificate is my biological father's and the name I have been using do not match I am not eligible for an I.D. They are trying to tell me I need to go through a legal name change due in part to the Patriot act an 9/11. This is a cost of almost 500-700 dollars not to mention approx 6 months of waiting and you may not be approved. By the way I am 35 and paid 100's of 1000's of dollars in taxes, bills, etc under this name why should I have to pay for my name and my family name?

The reason you have to do it is because that's one of the many Laws that went into effect following 9/11. I'm not saying it's fair but that's why you have to do it.

Your real legal name is your birth certificate name, That is what you have to use for a legal ID.

Also who and where did you talk about a name change?

Cost should be less than 200 for a filing fee. Most states easy fill in the blank form or can be done from online forms you get.

And in most cases it is done within a month.
