Help, please...

This has cropped up in last few months. 3 yr old spayed female. Cat box located at foot of cabinet & very private. Cat is peeing on floor next to the cat box. Cat box is cleaned twice a day minimum. Crystal litter. Cat will sometimes jump into tub & pee there.

Dtr or I clean the floor under cat box every time cat pees there. Also use odor neutralizer, but floor and underneath is probably soaked. Apparently not peeing anywhere else in house.

Any suggestions??

Twice a day!? Geez.. my cat was lucky if I did it once a month.

Try using a different cat litter. Non scoopable. Just to see. I have known a few cats that just don't like the scoopable kind.

Possibly move the catbox... somewhere else private. Then put the cat in it and let it wander from there (so it knows where it is)

Sometimes they say if a cat has a urinary tract infection, they sometimes go in places other than where they"should" go.

Is this the only cat in the house? Sometimes if there is more than one, one if em' is marking it's territory.

@ One of several pre-conditions to getting her cat after her very allergic big brother went away to college. It's the silica crystal litter that has to be stirred a bit to better absorb the pee. This type of litter can go almost a month without a change.

@ I havent had cats for a while so forgot about the possibility of a urinary tract infection. One of our cats had a UTI but you could sorta smell the ammonia-y smell on her. This one is clean and fresh like a daisy. Indoor only cat.

@ Only cat & totally indoors. She might be upset that I sit and read in the back yard and feed the squirrels, though... yowls and jumps at the glass. Female cat, too.

I tried the crystal litter, and had a cat that just hated it. So, if you have switched to that and there is another one that she liked better, I'd say switch back. Check for UTIs. And try another box... some cats just like to have separate boxes for pooing and peeing.

Cats can act out to get you attention. It may well be that she resents the fact that you get to go outside, and she does not.

Give her one-on-one time daily. Time of petting and talking to her where nothing else is more important than her. When you go outside to feed the squirrels, reassure her. Give her special attention when you return.

My four cats hate the crystal litter too. I ran my hand through it and it feels like tiny sharp pieces of glass.

I suggest you change the litter to a different type/brand.

Thanks for all the great suggestions, folks!

We got a new litter box, switched back to an organic pellet type litter cat had in her shelter & placed plastic sheeting under her box.

She used the new box & litter for 2 days to poo & pee and ignored her other box.

Then this morning she peed on the plastic sheeting under her new box and litter. Her old box was not used.

Now... we had put her new box and litter where her old box was, so now I moved it.

Dtr went back to her mom's last night for a week so maybe cat was upset at one of us this morning & took it out on us by peeing on the floor.

Dtr & mom trying to coordinate a vet visit, but I am not sure it's a UTI & it may be more "emotional" issue?
