I am installing a new tub trap for a jetted tub I am installing. I have a 2x8 vertical ledger right where the drain needs to be. So, my question is:

If I install a trap without having the pipe go vertically down from the drain first, will this disrupt the flow of water to the point where I won't have free-flowing water. I was planning on putting two ninety degree PVC joints that then attach to the trap. But is is not straight down into the trap from the drain. Is this against code?

How much of a offset do you have to have? Installing a "dogleg" with two 90's is never a good idea in drainage. It slows the flow down and is a dandy place for clogs to hang out. 45's would be much better.

Or, you could simply cut the 2 X 8 and head it off. Good luck, Tom

Tom gave you very good answer... There is always way to run it through framing. Can you post a photo of the trap area ?

I am not sure how to attach an image but the problem is simple. I just don't want compromise the load bearing of the floor by cutting through a 2 x 8. This is a 42" wide tub and is estimated at around 800 - 900 lbs max. I would pretty-much eat through the entire board trying to make room for the trap. To give you a better idea of the area, the 2 x 8 sits on top of an outside wall because there is an overhang on the 2nd story. The drain center is just inside that wall and directly over the 2 x 8 ledger. It couldn't have been more of a hastle.
