It will show when the baby is born? It is for my sister I already had my baby and she was as healthy as they come, my sister is having a baby boy and she smoked heavily for the first few months, and she just smoked MJ the other night and she's worried that something bad will happen and she doesn't want it to show up in a test when the baby is born.

Unless her blood, urine or hair, or the baby's is being checked for MJ, there is no reason for her to worry. Worry about being found out, I mean.

She needs to quit it, now. She can get stoned later. Her child deserves a choice in whether his synapses get full of THC.

How do you know if the baby might show signs or not, when it is born do they automatically check for it?

I'd be more concerned with the heavy smoking in the first few months... but what's done is done... just encourage her to refrain from now on.
Early in pregnancy is when the majority of development is taking place and the last trimester is known for a tremendous amount of increased brain connections.
It will pass through the system fairly quickly... which her body will do the majority of metabolizing, especially with it being the one time at 6 months, so no, it wouldn't show up at birth from a few months before.
While many people see no problems, others do... especially once their child in farther into school as often any concerns may emerge as learning difficulties... even slight.
Certainly you will have those who don't appear to have any effect... just as you will find some people who smoked all their lives and they turned out just fine, but that still doesn't mean it is a good choice and worth the risks. Besides, who knows... those people may have been even smarter or healthier if different choices were made earlier.

Smoking marijuana during pregnancy may affect your baby's growth and the development of his nervous system. Studies have shown that children who were exposed to marijuana during pregnancy sometimes have problems focusing their attention and solving problems.

Children of heavy pot users may also have problems with short-term memory, concentration, and judgment. (There's no evidence so far, however, that marijuana use during pregnancy causes attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).

One study even found that young children whose mothers smoked marijuana during pregnancy had a higher risk of leukemia than those whose mothers did not.

What's more, there's no way to know if the pot you're smoking has been laced with other drugs (such as PCP) or contaminated with pesticides, which would put your baby at even higher risk. And using marijuana increases the chance that your baby will have birth defects if you're also drinking alcohol or smoking tobacco.

If you smoked pot before you realized you were pregnant, don't panic. The chance that your baby has been affected is very small. Still, it's important to be honest with your practitioner about your previous use of pot and other recreational drugs. She may want to run some extra tests to be sure your baby is developing normally.

    THIS MAY ALSO HELP YOU.

OK I can only go by my own experience and the experience of some of my friends. I am not especially proud of myself for this, but I did continue to smoke weed during both of my pregnancies. More so with my first... I had friends who had smoked while pregnant and their babies came out perfect, so I did not think there was much of a risk. I did quit 3 weeks before the birth of my son, because I didn't want him to be born "stoned" if that makes any sense. He is 6 now and is probably the smartest kid in his class... reading and writing way above his level. He is also the star player on his soccer team. My daughter is also very smart and very mature for her age, 3. My children were both between 7 and 8 pounds and I had to be induced both times... no pre mature labor here. I did not smoke while breastfeeding my son and I did with my daughter and I did not have enough milk for her after 2 months, I had to supplement. I think it does keep from allowing adaquate milk production.

I SMOKED MARIJUANA WHILE I WAS PREGNANT BUT NOT BECAUSE I DIDN'T CARE ABOUT MY BABY,BUT BECAUSE I HAD TO BECAUSE I HAD HORRIBLE MORNING SICKNESS THROUGHOUT MY PREGNANCY AND WEED WAS THE ONLY CURE FOR IT.THE FIRST 3 MONTHS OF MY PREGNANCY I WAS JUST SUPER TIRED AND I COULDN'T SMOKE AT ALL BECAUSE ALL I WANTED TO DO WAS REST,BUT AT ABOUT 4 MONTHS AND ALL THE WAY UP TO THE BIRTH OF MY SON, I WAS ALWAYS SICK.I SUFFERED FROM THROWING UP, NOT BEING ABLE TO DIGEST ANY FOOD AND EVERYTHING ELSE ASSOCIATED W/ MORNING SICKNESS & THE ONLY THING THAT RELIEVED ME FROM IT WAS IF I SMOKED A LITTLE WEED.THE MEDICINE THAT THE DOCTOR GAVE TO ME JUST WASN'T WORKING AND IF IT HAD I WOULDN'T HAVE SMOKED WEED BUT I GENUINELY NEEDED IT IN ORDER TO MAKE IT THROUGH THE REST OF MY PREGNANCY. I KNOW TONS OF WOMEN WHO DID THE SAME &I EVEN HAVE A FRIEND WHO TOLD ME HER OWN MOM TOLD HER THAT WEED COULD HELP WITH MORNING SICKNESS.MY BABY WOULD'VE PROBABLY BEEN SMALL FROM VOMITING BUT WEED LET ME EAT&NOT THROW IT UP!

I'd love to see your claims validated with actual scientific EVIDENCE. These come in the form of research papers and quotes from reputable sources. "Studies have shown," "One study even found." These kind of claims need to be backed up with solid evidence, should you value your credibility. As it is now, you come of like an uneducated, puritanical, fraud. And if you equate marijuana's side effects with alcohol and comercially-processed tobacco, you might as well believe the earth is flat, too. In my 8 years in medical research and clinical trials, never once have I come across a pharmacist who claimed pot smoking moms gave their child leukemia. In fact, don't they give Marinol, a THC-derived drug to mothers with profound n/v? AND kids with leukemia? My verdict? You are ignorant and brainwashed and not who you say you are. Wake up and STOP LYING.

Would there be any chance pf the placenta comeing out a different color from smokeing mj? My sister is worried that they will check because of that.

As a labor and delivery nurse, I can answer this professionally rather than from experience.

If we suspect marijuana use, we test the mother's urine prior to delivery. If it comes out negative, yet the baby shows signs of distress and/or withdrawal, we test the baby's meconium. Meconium is the first few "poops" of the baby. Anything ingested during pregnancy can be detected with a Meconium test.

Now, not to worry though, rarely do we take a child away from a mother who she or her child tests positive for marijuana. It is the more serious drugs such as crack, coke, heroin, etc... that warrant removal from the mother.

No, we cannot tell from the color of the placenta.

My nephew is 3 months as of three days ago he seems perfect. When my sister had him they checked both of them for any kind of drug. Luckily no MJ was found in him but she had high levels of whatever that hpdkfj is that's MJ. (lol) She also had to be induced, and he was 7LBs 7oz.

She smoked MJ everyday of her pregnancy, two and three times a day. And joked about smoking a "fat one" the night before she was scheduled to be induced. She also smoked a pack of cigarettes a day her entire pregnancy.

I do believe that SOME hospitals have to call DHS or CPS (department of human service/ child protection service) to report this, and you run the risk of having your baby taken away, and you in jail. BUT I think that its more for "harder" drugs.. In my opinion ANY drug is a freaken "hard" drug. :(

Having known several "pot babies" I have never seen ANY ill effects. In fact, out of the 12 or so kids I know whose moms smoked during pg, 3 are on the honour roll at school, one is an artistic prodigy, and 2 are considered "gifted"
MJ use during pregnancy carries the same risk as smoking anything else-low birth weight, placenta previa, and premature labour.
Most studies are not accurate studies, as smoking moms are likely to lie about the amount smoked, as well as the use of alcohol, other drugs and tobacco. Also, moms who smoke MJ during pregnant generally have a lower socio-economic background. ALL studies that have "proven" MJ related birth defects did not correct for these other factors.
For a look at the effects of MJ during pregnancy without all the other stuff, find the Jamacian study done in the late 70's. They studied "root women" who smoked MJ during pregnancy, but do no other drugs-even caffeine. Every one of those babies was well within "normal".
That said, it is best not to do any drugs during pregnancy, unless prescribed. This includes alcohol, tobacco, OTC drugs, and caffeine. After all, the marijuana could be laced with something that might not be so great for the baby.

I wouldn't worry. Read the post above, she didn't have any problems. Plus, I've heard (don't know if it is true) that in the Netherlands doctors prescribe Marijuana to woman who have severe morning sickness.
