F1 and OPT what taxes I must pay?
    Hello

I am currently on an F1 visa and OPT. I just started working for a company in NYC. I have heard that I am only reliable for federal and income taxes and am not required to pay for social security and medicare. Is that correct? I am about to explain this to my company. What evidence can I have to support me when I notify the company.

    Thank you so much.

    1. Everyone on F1 / OPT is exempt from residency for 5-years. The income is not subject to FICA taxes. (Refer IRS publication 519 Tax for Aliens at Internal Revenue Service)

    2. You must file non-resident tax return form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ. You will not get standard deduction but will get exemption deduction. You can claim itemized deduction and or deduction as per tax treaty.
