    GFI won't stay set
I live in a 1700 sgft house. When the gfi in the upstairs bathroom pops,I loose all my out lets in my basement. Seems funny to me that my basement outlets are not connected to my basement bathroom gfi.So I was wondering if this is too much for the one gfi. Seven years ago when I bought this house we noticed it popping a lot,so I changed the gfi, it worked a lot better but would still blow sometimes for various reasons, plugging&unplugging and what not. But 2 days ago it blew and is staying blown. I did replace with new one,and even unplugged everything on the circuit. Could someone please tell me how to find my problem.

Remove wiring from the load side if it doesn't trip, problem is with wiring or something connected to the load side wiring.
If able, I would wire line and load together upstairs and connect to Line on Upstairs GFI, then Add another GFI Downstairs where it first comes in to basement, If it trips, you don't have to go upstairs, and a fault won't knock out the upstairs GFI.
Problem needs to be located and fixed first.
    Any new wiring?

First disconnect the load to verify it is not the gfi.
What trips a gfi is a difference in current being drawn from hot and neutral. If you are in contact with the hot, the hot draws more than the neutral and trips.
You can disconnect at different recepticles to determine the direction of the fault.
