Hi I have a Maltese and he does have floppy ears. Here's the problem I've taken him to the doctors 3 times about his ear, because he's been frequently shaking his head, scratching, biting his arms, wiping his face. His ears always have a discharge of brown. I recently took him to the doctors due to a really bad ear infection, the vet flushed his ears out, clipped the hairs inside his ear, gave me otomax (which I been using on him). And said to give him different food, so I bought a high quality allergy free food brand. Not even kidding, I thought the horror was over but I was wrong he has started to scratch and shake his head again ONLY A WEEK AFTER THE FLUSHING!! What really frustrates me is that a I don't have money to keep taking him to the vet! Please helP!

I have several dogs, but specifically my Shepherd shares the same issues from time to time.

(I just went to check if I still have an old tube of the stuff... but I don't, sadly. Sorry!). I did have to use Otomax for another one of my dogs and it took care of the problem, but there is another cream that my GSD used and it was the one for him.

I would put some peroxide on a flat cotton ball, (the cotton balls one would use to remove makeup... ) and clean the ears w/ that every second day. Every other day I would clean the ears w/ vinegar. In other words alternate.

Black gunk inside the ears is usually a sign of ear mites... I'm no tech. or vet, but it's been my experience w/ my dogs...

Holistic allergy dog foods have certainly helped in my home.

Keeping the my dogs out of water, for my spaniel mix is the answer for her... so when she goes for grooming I tell them to watch out for her sensitive ears...

Allergies are often something to look into here.

Also, ear mites are contageous... between dogs as they socialize. Also something to look into.
