I'm about to attach the drain (Kohler K-9132) to the acrylic shower receptor (Kohler K-9543). How do I tighten the nut that holds the drain in place?

The nut is about a quarter inch thick and 4.5" in diameter with indented grip places. This is larger than any wrench I own. When I have tightened similar (smaller) nuts in electrical work, I've used a hammer and chisel to make it tight. What is the best approach here?

A second question is whether is is better to use silicone sealant or plumbers putty under the drain flange.

Hey Dennis,

This is a typical shower drain. I have always used a rope of plumbers putty but silicon jel is just as good. Dealers choice on that. Let me run down the installation. You'll first run a seal, (your choice) under the lip. Then set the drain and go underneath. The fiber anti-friction washer goes first, next, in line, is the neoprene washer and last the large nut. I hand tighten the nut as much as I can. If you haven't a wrench large enough to complete locking it down then a hammer and chisel will complete the installation. Good luck, Tom
