How can I block users w/ notebook and laptops from using my home internet connection? I am not good w/ computers at all so I have no clue! My nephew who has laptop and is not allowed on internet (unless at home w/ parents under supervision) is able to connect when he comes over. Im assuming he is using my network or something? Like I said, I'm really that bad when it comes to computers! I have a home computer w/ internet through my cable provider. Is he able to log on because of that?

What can I do to stop users? Also, I have a neighbor who will come and sit on my patio to use my connection w/ his laptop! He isn't the one paying the bill so I want it to stop!

What can I do? (oh and please, speak in terms I can understand when responding! )

On your wireless you will need to log into your wireless modem controls and set up a password that has to be used to get onto the internet.

On your own computers also, you can set passwords needed to log on.

If you don't know how to do it yourself, you need to hire it done.

Oh and as far as having password to log onto my computer here I do have one.

I have to assume that you do not use a cabled internet connection, but a wireless one.
Can you please specify what type that system is?
That is important, as blocking access to others by using a password has to be programmed into the system, and every system has a different way of doing that.
That will end your neighbour from accessing your Internet connection.

Please also state what Operational System you use : Vista or XP?

Note : even if you block the wireless internet connection, your newphew can still connect to the Internet if he connects to the incoming cable connection.
You have to block that in some mechanical way )locating the box in a locked-up cupboard.
Both actions together will block your nephew... (They are smart these youngsters :) )

In view of earlier messages here :
You have to distinguish between your own computer and the local Internet network.

You do not have to change the configuration of your own computer, but the configuration of the Internet network at your place !

The incoming cable line goes to a box, where the television and Internet are split. The Internet connection goes either direct to your computer (a cabled system - either direct or via a wired router) or - as I assume to be your situation - to a wireless router.

Your computer communicates with that wireless router as if they are using some walky talky connection ( and so do your nephew and your neighbour !)

Hi Credendovidis! Thanks so much for the quick responses. Ok so, let me tell you what I can about the system I have set up here.

I purchased a dell desktop computer. I then called my cable provider to also get internet access through them. They came and hooked everything up (im guessing modem cause I think I get charged $2 per month for it! :)) So my internet and cable TV is through same provider. Oh and I have Windows Vista.

Ok so did I totally NOT answer your question or did I give you the info you needed to help me?

Contact your cable provider who hooked the system up. Ask them what type of wireless router/connection you have.

Just because you are not using wireless with your desktop computer does not mean that your router does not have a wireless access point.

You need to enable wireless security in your router. At the very least, unscrew the antennas.

Secondly, you can further secure your router by limiting what MAC addresses are allowed to connect to the Internet through your connection. The MAC address is like a serial number for your network card. They are unique for each one.

Refer to your manual for configuring your router.

You have a cable internet and I believe you have a device there like a wireless modem or a wireless router that transmit wireless signal that's why people with wireless laptop can access the internet using your cable connection and in order for you to stop this you need to enable wireless security on that wireless modem or wireless router you can contact your cable provider for that...
