    Is this legal?
A buddy of mine from work had had Blue Shield insurance for the past 13 years. Here recently over the last 2 years he has had cancer and c.o.p.d. and multiple other health problems resulting from smoking. He came into work today and had told me that Blueshield had dropped his insurance because basically he was costing them too much money. So now he doesn't have any insurance what so ever? Is this legal for them to do? I figured if a person needs health insurance that's why they get it for medical reasons not to have it dropped 10 years later or for however long because they aren't making any money. Please help. Thanks

He's not making any money? Is he no longer employed by the company who initially issued the policy?

If this was a personal policy, not part of a group policy, they do not have to renew the policy. So at the annual renewal time the company may either raise the rates ( alot) or cancell the person.

    Group policies work different

His insurance is through his own personal choice not our company. All I know is that him his wife and his son are on the policy. I will see if the renemal time was up and get back with you.

Many companies do not have a promise to renew, some policies do, like those that United American sell for example have policies that can not be cancelled as long as prem is paid.
