    Possible stench pipe leak?
I'm hoping that somebody here will be able to assist with an ongoing problem. I live in a 2 story property, and reside in the downstairs of the property - the upstairs is used just by guests.

Every now and again there seems to be issues with regards to "bad smells" in the front bedroom of the property. These smells aren't always there - they could come for 2 days, and then vanished entirely for months, then only to reappear out of nowhere again.

The front bedroom is directly above the downstairs toilet, and the stench pipe is 'boxed in', which runs up and out of the roof at the top.

I called a plumber, and he came - took a smell, and couldn't smell anything. He suggested that maybe a rat was dead in the attic - I knew that this was incorrect, but checked anyway - nothing.

To me it smells of sewerage, hence believing that I have a problem with the stench pipe. However, would stench pipes give off intermittent smells like this? It seems to come and go.

Any ideas what it could be?

    Thanks!

This could be nothing more then a wind shift blowing the odor back down into your home from time to time, If there were a brteak in the pipe the smell wouldn't disappear for months at a time. About the only way to tell without tearing anything up is a smoke test for leaks. Good luck, Tom
