I'll be away from my house for several months. I will shut off the main water supply to the house while away. Should I use the Vacation setting on my hot water heater or turn it off entirely?

If it has a 'vacation setting' it is there for a reason, so use it. I don't turn off my hot water heater because its gas.

Good idea! Shutting off the water to your house is the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy. If you ever come home to a leak running 24/7 for two weeks you'll know what I mean. I would also set your water heater on vacation.

I live in Calgary, Canada. I think I have this figured out. It is OK to both turn off the water to the house and set the hot water heater to Vacation. Will be leaving the heat on and do have someone checking.

Here is one more thing for folks in your situation to consider. Most heat systems can be safely lowered to around 45 degrees. I set my cabin at 45 all winter. I have a land line phone and bought a thermostat that interfaces with the phone. By dialing my cabin's phone I can control the heat/cooling and the place is comfy when I get there .
