If I am residing with a roommate, and both of our names are on the lease, and I decide to relocate to another state for the purpose of getting married can I still be held responsible for half the rent although I've given a thirty day notice and roommate still continues to live there.

In a very brief nutshell - yes. You are bound by the lease which is a legal contract.

Now, you can always try to sublet or make some other arrangement with your roommate.
