Hopefully this is an easy fix. I updated all my outlets in my kitchen but I can't get my GFCI outlet to work. It was already connected to a white GFCI outlet and I installed a black one. It had two pairs of wires and the ground. Apparently it controls the other outlet close by. After I installed and turned the power on it doesn't work. But when I press the Reset and the light stays on the appliance works on both outlets. What does this mean. I tried interchanging the pairs of wires to see if I had the Line and load reversed but it didn't work when I reversed them. I even tried installing another GFCI outlet. Why isn't it working without the reset pressed in?

Well, I did a little more research and it turns out that this is how it actually works. I was comparing it to a later model GFCI which doesn't have the light. Apparently this Leviton GFCI outlet has a light to let you know it is working, and the reset must remain pressed. It just looked funny having that button halfway into the receptacle and I thought it was supposed to have it out. Oh well. Good thing no question is a stupid question right? LOL

Good deal, also some, the light indicates on, others, the light indicates tripped.
Also the newer? Ones won't reset unless power is available to the line side(If a breaker is tripped, GFI won't reset)

I installed 2 new GFCI's after the original failed to supply voltage to appliances downstream. The new one functioned perfectly when installation was completed; all outlets downstream and the GFCI outlate worked. Sometime later, (I don't know exactly how much later, less than 2 hours) the newly installed GFCI outlet had no power in the outlet but everything downstream worked OK. The only thing plugged into the new GFCI was a water softener which indicated it was getting power for at least a few minutes after it was installed. Could the problem be the water softener?

Softener shouldn't have hurt it.
Just sounds like a Bad GFI.
Remove load side to verify is supplies the others.
This post is a couple of years old, since then some newer GFI's indicator lights when At "End of Life" They bite, I like an indicator to show tripped or not.
They also will not reset without power to the line side of the GFI

From what you have described it appears that you do not have the GFI wired to protect the down stream outlets. That may or may not be what you intended.

Suggest that you plug some other device in the GFI to determine if GFI is defective or if water softener possibly has a fault.
