I used to clean my '93 Civic's engine every year. Haven't done it in the past two years and now with dirt, grime and an oil seep from the valve cover, it looks like any other engine.

The problem with cleaning is that the engine compartment was not designed for high pressure water. I'm wondering if anyone has experience (good or bad) with cleaning an older engine?

See if someon has a real steam cleaner, not hot high pressure washing, it will do a much better job, use less water. Most should not charge too much.

I've always had good success with the spray can stuff they sell in the Automotive asile at WalMart. I imagine that a couple treatments would be necessary for 2 years worth of yuck, but at $5 a can, it's cheap.

I agree with the Spray cans. I use to use Gunk Engine Cleaner, but really don't know if it's still around... that was years ago. Now, I have someone else do it, with my yearly tune-up, etc.
Check with a local auto parts store; Advance Auto, Pep Boys, etc,; they can suggest a good spray-on, then just hose it off; no high pressure. But cover up with Glad wrap, whatever, the parts that don't like water!

They still make the gunk engine cleaner... I see this stuff at dollar stores cheaper than $5, I THINK $2.50, can't remember.
