Best time to attack them is in the evening about an hour after the sun sets. They all come home and get comfy. Try something like Ortho's spray Find Ortho ProSelect Hornet & Wasp Killer, 18 oz and other Insect Control at Aubuchon Hardware It shoots about 20' and can smother the nest and even knock them right out of the air if they do get through.

When you do spray them. If that's what you do. And the nest will not hurt anything where it is. You can leave it. Bees, wasps and hornets usually will not re-occupy a nest especially if there are dead ones in it

First have a bee keeper inspect the wasps nest and then he may instruct you if an exterminator or pest control specialist can get rid of them. You should not attempt to handle situation yourself and especially from on the roof. This would be dangerous.
