Not a great price range to work in for a real good laptop

You can check out www.Newegg.com for laptop offers. I just did a quick scan and there are dozens of good laptops for under $1000. Didn't look like they have Office on them though (didn't look too deep) but if you're a student you might be better off purchasing MS Office via school. Student discounts are very good on MS products.
