I suppose it could depend on what someone determines the meaning of "profession" to be. Often it is associated with a certain amount of required training and something you choose to do because it is a passion, something you are drawn to, something you enjoy, and/or something you plan on doing for an extended period. The fact that you are likely to be paid as opposed to volunteering to do the job also constitutes it as a profession.
For most schools or centers where you would be working with young children, a certain level of education and training are required. While you may not make a great deal of money working in such a profession, money alone does not make one profession "better" or more worthy than another... however, it can be a factor in what profession someone may choose to pursue.
