My 3yr old miniature dashound has began to snap and bite at my grandkids, is there anything I can do besides gettingrid of the dog?

Separate them?

Did they somehow hurt the dog? I wonder why the change of behavior - ? When it's a sudden change I always question the dog's health.

Has something changed in the dog's life?

This is difficult behavior to stop. My dog is somewhat aggressive and protective inside the house and so I use sit/stay with her and that works but it certainly wouldn't work if people would come up to her.

Well miniature any thing have what is called a napoleanic complex. Ever see a chihuahua snap at a pit bull? It's an over compensation for their size in order to protect their territory. I am in Pit Bull rescue but have dealt with just about every breed, smaller dogs tend to be more intimidated by children because children look at the animal curiously (which in doggy world is a stare down for dominance) and it does not help that they are more at eye level. I would suggest in this situation not to be too hard on the dog, as it will bite harder because it will feel as though you reordered that pack. With the grandchildren, and all children for that matter, tell them not to pet doggy on the face head or neck, do not run at doggy, pull on doggy, etc. For my toddlers, I tell them doggy is a baby and we have to be very gentle and only touch doggy when mommy is right there. Chances are the dog is feeling threatened and behaviour modification is the best correction. Does your dog have a crate? It is important that a dog has an area that is its own, a crate often serves as a den, and a dog who is feeling overwhelmed will often retreat to that "den" where it feels safe. If it does have such a place, please keep the grandchildren away from that area as it can make it feel like an unsafe place causing anxiety in the dog, which can lead to more snapping. Yes! Call in a dog trainer. They can work in your home, even with your grandchildren, to resolve the problem.

Bully Babies Pit Bull Rescue, we basically rescue and temper. Test American Pit Bull Terriers and Am Staffs, train them with basic obedience, supply them vet. Care and place them into foster homes under our organization until we find the perfect forever home. We have rehabilitated fighting dogs, bait dogs, aggressive dogs, etc. And have given them wonderful forever homes. We have dealt with pretty much every kind of scenario you can think of.
