I would like to know clearly what is the difference between share permission and security permission in ntfs . Because both have permission option but what changes does it make exactly for the folder. And one more thing what permission should I select for the user to copy the file but shouldn't edit and save it . And what permission should I give to the user to edit the file and save it but shouldn't delete it

Sharing is really just that.. you are allowing others to read it (default)

READ (allows open/saveas or copy)

CHANGE (allows edit) <Actually I am unsure if you can delete with this setting..

FULL (Allows all)

Sharing is for sharing over the network
Security is local (or network)

Example: I log in to my PC... and in the C:\Documents and Settings I can get into my login name folder & all users... but if someone else logged in, they cannot get to MY folder, and I would not be able to get into their folder. That's Security settings.

(I am fairly sure of this, but someone correct me if I am wrong :) )

Then if I want to give permissions to a particular group or user what permission level should I use? Should I use share permission or the security permission (user logs in through roaming profile) :confused:

I THINK (not positive) you need to share the folder, then set the permissions in the share section.

Add the username/group. Select it and checkmark the level of control you want to allow.

Do not bother with Share permissions, rather use Groups or Users(depends on Workgroup or Domain) and assign Read for viewing the file, or Read and Write to allow modification but not deletion. You will have to "dig" a little find the settings already in place. All I can tell is the approxiamate OS you have. In closing beware of Full Control, Admin or Power User when deciding.

Use the permissions for Groups or Users(depends on workgroups or domains) and set to Write or to Read and Write. If you set them by separate log-in or user then you "muddy the waters." Easier to manage do by memberships.
