DVD not working on Compaq laptop
Hi. New to this site. The DVD player on my Compaq Presario V4000T notebook is not working. It is recognized in Device manager and is showing in My Computer. When I insert a CD or DVD, I can hear it start to spin up, but is "chatters" and then when it stops the disk is not recognized. This notebook was shipped recently. Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Joe

    Has it ever worked?

    Is this a new laptop?

    When was last time worked?

Have you tried multiple discs, music, movie, data... and the discs are clean and not scratched?

With disc in drive, right click on drive and click properties, does anything come up?

Any changes that either happened or that you perhaps made to your computer around the time that the problem started

What OS? Did you contact Compaq?

    Seahwk83:

    Yes it was working

    No it's a Compaq V4000T

It was working until I shipped it home. Now it is not working

I have tried multiple discs and they are know working discs

It just shows the info for the DVD drive when I right click on the drive and check properties. Nothing about the disc.

The only change made was that it was shipped from one location to another.

I am running Windows XP Pro.

Compaq was no help at all.

    Thanks

Can you manually slide the laser? Pop open the cd drawer... and gently move the part that has the lens in it.. just a smidge. Don't touch the lens.

Try again. I'm just wondering if something get jostled in shipping. (or dropped :( )

I was able to slide the laser a little. It seemed a little difficult to move. But it did not help. Still not working. What is the "Home" position for the laser? All the way in or out?

Doesn't matter... it is supposed to reset itself when it fires up and reads the info off the cd (starts at the center)

Is this a removable drive? Try popping it out.. checking the pins/connector etc... then re-inserting (I think it has to be off? I don't remember)
