What can I do about a bad contractor?
I hired a contractor to do work on my home he was paid half up front. He did part of the work in a substandard manner and left an has not come back. I would like to know what I can do in Ohio. I know about the BBB but they do nothing. I will of course be filing a claim in court, but what else can be done to stop him and maybe get some of my money back?

As far as stopping him, you can report him to the BBB but I don't know that prospective customers even check.

If he is required to be licensed in your area and is licensed, you can report him - with photos - to the licensing board.

Of course, you get your money back through a Court action.

If he is not licensed and a license is required in your area the Court will not help you. Courts will not enforce what is basically an illegal contract/agreement.

It would help a bit if we had more details. What did he do that is substandard and has there been any communication between you two since his last work day? At this point we might guess he was hit by a truck last week and is laid up in a hospital.

Good point - you don't know where "he" is until you call - or write - and ask.

I forgot to ask but did you sign an agreement with the contractor? Your rights may be limited by a written contract if there is no specific completion date. Share with us any documentation.
