    H1B to green card
    Hi,
I am currently on my 24th month of my H1B. I believe I have a total of 6 years available to me (please confirm), but I will need to extend it on the 3rd year.
I am wondering when is it a good time to apply for the green card. Is it better to do at the year 6? Or do I need to do on year 3?
Also, I was told I can't leave the country between year 2 and 3, by my HR department. They are unable to tell me why. They say the lawyers said it is because I need to go back home, apply for the extension there, and then return. They also said I would loose some time in my visa if I did that, so they recommended that I stayed in the country until year 3 is up.
Lastly, what is the cost in renewing the H1B versus a Green Card application? Which parties are responsible for which fees?
    Thank you so much,
    C.

You can file for adjustment of status any time during these 6 years if your employer is willing to sponsor immigrant visa for you.
The issue about filing extension and leaving US should be discussed with your employer's attorney.
