Unlicensed & uninsured accident
I am a licensed and ALWAYS insured driver, or so I thought... My stupid dad forgot to pay the car insurance (I'm over 18 and own the car) and my unlicensed boyfriend borrowed my car that week and got in a wreck. For whatever reason the insurance came up as current but today my insurance company told me it had lapsed by a few days and their not covering the accident. My boyfriend's license was taken away in 2006 due to unpaid tix (he was poor, not cheap). The fines piled upon each other and got way out of hand. He told the cop at the scene that he didn't have a license and they impounded my car for 30 days, but issued him no ticket. He showed the insurance in the glove box and it came back fine at the time. Are they now going to mail him a ticket? I was planning on just paying off his debt to get his license back, but if they're just going to take it away again, I can't afford to pay all the fines right now cause he won't be able to pay me back. He's a mechanic and any decent, worth having job in the field requires a license so you can test drive the repaired cars. I live in California and don't know how this all works. Are they going to take my license too? I wasn't even there. Did he get lucky or are the tix probably coming still? Up until this incident all he had to do was come up with 4k t pay his old debt and he could get his license back, do we have to wait another year now? Is there any way to beg for a restricted license to get to and from work and for work purposes. I understand most people can take a bus to work, but you can't not test drive a car and be a mechanic. Not having a license is and has been hindering his ability to pay his fines, is there anything we can do?
