The plug is treaded into the center of the drain you can try and place a screw drvier under the plug and then turn. The idea is to eliminate the play and allow you to make the threads work.
Depends on what type of plug you have. Can you tell us how you operated it, was it a toe pop up?
If you have this stopper,(see image) ther's a set screw that you loosen and simply pull up. Put a hook on a clotheshanger and go fishing. Good luck, TomQuote:

Tom's type is more common, so look for the set screw. If no set screw then this may be the type you have and again here you neeed to grab the stem under the lid, hold it tight and then twist top off using pliers above lid...
Hope that made sense.
Let us know how you make out...
MARK
Mark, your is what I call a toe pop up.
Hi Bob...you reminded me of the last time I answered this question...here is excactly what I posted to these guys!!
For a roller ball tub drain (OR TOE POP UP... ;)... see pic. Above) you need to turn this stopper counterclockwise to remove it. However, you will also need to take a pair of needlenose pliers or similar tool and hold the stem under the stopper (see line under stopper at picture above) so you can rotate the stopper out counterclockwise (may need another pair of pliers to loosen from top as you are holding from below with needlenose or similar tool). If you don't hold the stem, this will turn counterclockwise forever... ok?
However as stated at my last post, Tom's is probably the drain they have!
Good luck!
..
Thanks for all your help.
The problem was, the pipe thread that connects to the main pipe was cracked. I found out
When I was cleaning and replacing the tub faucet (where the water comes out first before
You pull it to push the water to the shower), I used the old pipe connector (5.5 in. plastic)
And when I was tightening it, It broke and I left a piece of thread inside the main. I have to go to home depot for the tool to get it out from the main. That what I figured. It will not break if the thread still good. Also contributed probably are the fixtures are loose to the wall so I tightened them all.
I just thought I'd add one more tidbit in case anyone else has this kind of plug. If you can get the plug down almost all the way but still get a channel lock pliers on it, there is a built in "catch" that will hold it while you break the threads loose. I couldn't get even a needle nose on the stem of mine.
There is a screw under the stopper that you cannot see. Take a screw driver and gentle circle under the stopper until you feel it. Loosen the screw and lift off the stopper. Be careful not to drop the screw down the drain.
My drain looks like the pic but I'm not able to get needle nose pliers under the drain to turn the top off. It hits the notches. Any ideas?
Hi tsigley and Welcome to The Plumbing Page. At AskMeHelpDesk.com. You're responding to a 4 year old dead thread . Look in then upper left hand corner of the first post form the date in the first post before you post, Thanks, Let's start over. Which is your plug?(see image)
Ok. I feel like an idiot. I didn't pay attention to how old the thread was and was excited that others may actually be able to help me before I hire a plumber... my bad.
My plug is closest to #6. It has 3 notches that you see which appears should have had something that they rest on to hold the plug up. I looked at the opening and there is no screw. I also screwed the knob off to only find a nub and not a screw that could be screwed out.
As you can see the stopper threads into the tub shoe. Why not simply remove the entire stopper? Good luck, Tom
