    '93 Civic idle surges temporarily
When I start my car cold, I don't take off until the idle goes well below 1500rpm. It runs quite well.

When I start my car warm, the idle is below 500rpm and it runs quite well.

However, when I start my car after it has been sitting for about an hour, the idle starts at 2000rpm and goes to about 1500 then starts to surge from 850rpm to 1600rpm for about a minute then runs quite well.

Does anyone know why the car surges? I would believe that some part is going to need to be replaced soon and I would like a bit of heads up before I take it into the shop.

Do the revs also stay up a bit higher when you stop at a red light after you've driven the car for a while?

If so, you should take off your EACV valve and clean it. It regulates idle rpms.

I have not driven the car until the idle has settled down. Once it settled down, it does not re-occur.

My wife drove the car and said that the check engine light came on. I told her to let the idle settle down before she drives. I drove the car immediately after her and the check engine light did not come on. I have been driving the car for over 2 months since then and no check engine light.

That just sparked a thought. Does the ECM keep a record of problems that I can decode to find the problem?

My car does similar to yours but my idle stays up at 2000 rpm and after about ten minutes it starts surging
