How do you find the pattern
I am trying to figure out the next 3 numbers and how you figure out how to get them?
    2,4,10,28,82,__,__,__,

    Thanks:eek:

Look at the differences between each pair of numbers. What do you notice about them? The pattern is quite simple.

Just subtract each pair of numbers from each other, what do you get? You should get a new sequence where the pattern is fairly obvious.

Hey now every time you "disagree" you give me a bad mark LOL

I wish I could but I was commenting to Capuchin...

Man you ARE a mathjerk. I told you exactly how to do it. Noone's going to do your homework for you.

Here's the answer! (Now that mathjerk has probably had to hand in his homework)

    2,4,10,28,82

subtracting adjacent terms to look at the differences:

    4-2=2, 10-4=6, 28-10=18, 82-28=54...

    2, 6, 18, 54...

as you can see, each of these terms is 3 times the previous one, so to carry on this sequence we get

    2, 6, 18, 54, 54*3=162, 162*3=486, 486*3=1458

    2, 6, 18, 54, 162, 486, 1458

now, to work outt the original sequence, we simply add these on to the previous terms

    2, 4, 10, 28, 82, 82+162=244, 244+486=730, 730+1458=2188

    so the final solution is

    2, 4, 10, 28, 82, 244, 730, 2188...

Hope this helps anyone who was scratching their head!

    Capuchin...

    THANK YOU! Lol

I could see the basic pattern but did not follow through with it...

It's been 11 years since I've had to do math... it shows sadly LOL
